New PhD Fellow: Verena Gisela Huppert

As of April 1st, 2017, CIRCLA has a new PhD fellow!

As of April 1st, 2017, CIRCLA has a new PhD fellow, as Verena Gisela Huppert started a PhD project on the skills gap in Greenland. The PhD focusses on investigating solutions and possible barriers that exist in regards to the skills gap challenge in Greenland. The PhD is a collaboration between Aalborg University, Arctic Consensus, Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq and the Greenland Business Association. As part of the research project, Verena will settle in Nuuk from summer 2017.

The PhD collaboration was established based on Verena’s Master’s thesis from spring 2016, which was carried out in collaboration with stakeholders in Nuuk, Greenland and Charlottetown, Canada. The focus of the thesis was on the retention of local high-skilled labour, as brain drain and the out-migration of high-skilled labour are challenges in both towns.

Verena is originally from the Frankfurt area in Germany, where she has both done vocational training in tourism in 2009 and a BA in Roman and Scandinavian Studies in 2014. After graduating, Verena moved to Aalborg in 2014 to do a Master of Arts in Culture, Communication and Globalization with a focus on Arctic Studies at Aalborg University. In addition to Verena’s stay in Denmark, Greenland and Canada, she also has lived in France and Sweden.
